A Memorable First Birthday Photoshoot in Birmingham
It hardly seems possible that an entire year has passed since you first welcomed your baby into the world. During those twelve months, they have developed their own expressions, preferences and personality—and a cake smash photoshoot is a wonderfully entertaining way to capture this special stage.
Your session will be relaxed, enjoyable and led at your child’s pace. Some babies dive straight into the cake, while others take a little more encouragement to explore. Every reaction is part of the experience, whether it is a huge smile, a curious look or a perfectly timed handful of cake.
As an experienced baby photographer, I know how to engage little ones without placing them under pressure. This allows me to create natural, expressive photographs that show their individual character.
Bespoke Cake Smash Themes Created for Your Child
Every family has a different vision for their baby’s first birthday photographs. You may prefer something simple and timeless, a colourful birthday celebration or a carefully styled theme inspired by something your child loves.
I create personalised cake smash themes using a coordinated selection of:
- Theme & Setup – Popular themes include pastel colors, jungle, princess, rustic, or character-based setups. Props like balloons, banners, flowers, or toys enhance the scene.
- Outfit – Babies often wear cute rompers, tutus, bow ties, or just a diaper cover to keep it simple.
- Cake – A small, soft-frosted cake (usually buttercream) is used to make it easy for the baby to smash.
- Timing – Best done when the baby is well-rested and fed just enough to be happy but still interested in the cake.
- Cleanup Plan – A quick bath setup or wipes on hand for cleaning up afterward.

Cake Smash Photography Questions
What is a cake smash session?
In a cake smash session, a baby (usually celebrating their first birthday) is given a cake to play with while a photographer records their reactions. It’s an enjoyable, messy photo shoot.
When should I book a cake smash photograghy session?
In order to have time to edit and deliver the pictures before the celebration, it is best to plan the photo shoot three to four weeks prior to the baby’s actual birthday.
What age is best for a cake smash photoshoot?
Cake smash sessions are usually arranged around a baby’s first birthday. They can take place shortly before or after the birthday, depending on when you would like to receive or use the photographs.
How long does a cake smash photo session last?
Most sessions last 30-60 minutes. Because babies have short attention spans, you can capture their best moments before they grow weary by keeping it brief.
Where does the session take place?
Sessions take place at the Antje Farmer Photography studio at 57 Hewell Road, Barnt Green, Birmingham, B45 8NL.
What should my baby wear?
The best looks are basic ensembles like a tutu, romper, diaper cover or themed costume. Steer clear of complicated clothing that could be uncomfortable or limit your range of motion, especially if you don’t want to be covered in cake.
Do I need to bring my own cake?
You can add a personalised cake as an extras.
What kind of cake is best for smashing?
The perfect cake is soft and small, with buttercream frosting. Steer clear of fondant and other dense foods. Light colors work better for photos (dark colors may stain).
What should I bring to the session?
- Extra outfit for baby (and parents)
- Wipes and a towel for cleanup
- Favourite toy or snack for comfort
- Sippy cup or bottle for hydration
Can siblings or parents be included in the session?
Yes. Before the smash, I provide a couple family photos. Siblings can join in for a cute, interactive moment
How soon will we receive the final images?
Photographers have different turnaround times, but it usually takes one to three weeks. If you need them sooner for a birthday party, discuss this in advance.
