What Is a Family & Outdoor Photography Session?

A professional family photoshoot gives you the opportunity to pause, spend time together and preserve this stage of your family’s story through beautiful, natural photographs.

Antje Farmer Photography provides relaxed family and outdoor photography sessions for families throughout Birmingham and the surrounding areas. Whether you would prefer photographs surrounded by nature or a more carefully styled portrait experience, your session will be planned around your family and the connections that make it unique.

Natural Family Photography in Birmingham

The most meaningful family photographs are often the ones that feel genuine. A shared smile, a child holding your hand or the laughter that happens when everyone forgets about the camera can say far more than a perfectly posed picture.

My family photography sessions combine gentle direction with plenty of opportunity for natural interaction. I will help with positioning when needed, but the experience will never feel stiff or overly formal.

Children are encouraged to move, play and show their personalities. Parents can relax, enjoy being together and trust me to capture both the beautifully composed portraits and the spontaneous moments in between.

What to Expect from Your Session

Outdoor Family Photoshoots Across Birmingham

Birmingham and its surrounding areas offer a wonderful variety of outdoor settings for family photography. From open parkland and woodland paths to gardens, meadows and seasonal landscapes, the natural environment creates a beautiful and relaxed background for your photographs.

Outdoor sessions provide children with the freedom to move and explore, making them particularly suitable for energetic little ones who may feel restricted inside a studio.

Depending on the season and the style of photographs you would like, your family photoshoot could incorporate:

Beautiful Locations for Family Photography in Birmingham

Birmingham may be known as a busy city, but it is also surrounded by beautiful parks, woodlands and open countryside.

Locations such as Sutton Park, Cannon Hill Park, the Lickey Hills and Birmingham Botanical Gardens can provide attractive surroundings for family portraits. Quieter countryside locations around Barnt Green and South Birmingham can also offer natural backgrounds away from the busiest parts of the city.

The right setting will depend on the age of your children, the time of year, the style you prefer and how far you would like to travel.

Some families already have a favourite park, woodland or outdoor space that holds special memories. If you have somewhere meaningful in mind, let me know and we can discuss whether it would be suitable for your session.

Family and Outdoor Photography Questions

What happens if my child will not cooperate?

Children are never expected to pose perfectly throughout a session. I use gentle prompts, movement and play to help them relax. Natural interaction often creates much more meaningful photographs than forced smiles.

Pets are an important part of many families and may be able to join suitable outdoor sessions. Please mention your dog when booking so the location and session can be planned appropriately.

Yes. Grandparents and other close relatives can be included in an extended family session. Please provide the total number of people when making your enquiry.

The duration can vary depending on the number of people involved and the ages of the children. Sessions are kept relaxed, with sufficient time for children to settle and for different family combinations to be photographed.

Sessions can take place at a suitable outdoor location in Birmingham or the surrounding area. The setting will be agreed in advance based on accessibility, season, lighting and the style of photographs you would like.

Outdoor family sessions can take place throughout the year, with each season providing a different look and atmosphere.

Spring
Fresh greenery, blossom and softer colours create a light and delicate setting for family portraits.

Summer
Longer days and warmer evenings provide more flexibility. Summer is ideal for natural photographs in woodland, meadows and open countryside.

Autumn
Golden leaves, warm colours and textured landscapes make autumn particularly popular for outdoor family photography.

Winter
Crisp landscapes and soft seasonal light can create beautifully understated portraits, provided everyone dresses appropriately for the weather.

The time of day is also important. Early mornings and the period before sunset often provide softer, more flattering light than the middle of the day. I will advise you on the most appropriate time based on your chosen location and season.

British weather is never completely predictable, but there is no need to worry.

The forecast will be monitored before your session. Light cloud can create excellent conditions for outdoor photography, while a small amount of drizzle may be manageable depending on the location.

If heavy rain, strong winds or unsafe conditions are expected, we can discuss rearranging the photoshoot. The aim is to provide an enjoyable experience and create the best possible photographs—not to force a session to go ahead in unsuitable weather.

Your clothing can make a considerable difference to the finished photographs, but coordinating does not mean everyone needs to wear identical outfits.

Choose complementary colours and comfortable clothing that allows everyone to move naturally. Neutral shades, earthy tones and soft colours generally work well outdoors and help keep the attention on your family.

Try to avoid:

  • Large logos and prominent branding
  • Very bright fluorescent colours
  • Distracting slogans
  • Extremely busy patterns
  • Outfits that feel uncomfortable or restrictive

Layers, knitwear and textured fabrics can photograph beautifully, particularly during autumn and winter.

I can offer guidance before your session to help you choose clothing that suits your family, the season and the chosen location.

You will normally be invited to view your professionally edited gallery after the session. The current prices and packages page states that galleries contain approximately 15–20 finished images.
